We began with the simple idea of creating affordable housing
|
The Early Days Community leaders determined to create housing for low wage earners in Orange County joined together in the late 1970s to urge public officials to use federal Community Development Block Grant funds to help this population. |
The leaders agreed in 1977 to create an independent , non-profit corporation to administer the community-based program. Today, this organization is the Orange County Community Housing Corporation.
|
Leadership in the early years included
- Richard Friedman, former Deputy Director and Chief Counsel of the California Department of Housing and Community Development
- Manny Mendez, architect
- Elsie Kroeshe, League of Women Voters member
- Mary Miller, League of Women Voters member
- Bob Johnson, author and microfilter engineer
- Gloria Lopez, Colonia Independencia representative
- Vicente Mas, Orange County planner
- Ralph Kennedy, Fair Housing Council urban planner

Following the footsteps of our first leaders
Following the steps of these leaders, the Orange County Community Housing Corporation has developed over 200 units of housing affordable to very low-income families in the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, Buena Park, Cypress, Placentia, Newport Beach, and Dana Point. Most of these apartments are owned and managed by the corporation, with assets now exceed ing $15 million. |
We now are more than a Home Builder
The Orange County Community Housing Corporation prides itself on being a unique builder of housing for very low income families. We don't build homes to sell them. We own our units and manage them, for the life of the properties. We want to ensure permanent change in our community. The affordability we create and the quality management we offer lasts many generations.
Although the management we offer begins with nonprofit organization, our staff includes skilled professionals with decades of experience in the building and property management industry. OCCHC's board members also are professionals in real estate and related fields and demand the highest quality and performance from our staff and projects. Professionalism is key to every aspect of our business-from the way we manage projects and work with city partners to our track record of delivery projects on time and on budget.
We seek to break the cycle of poverty with affordable, decent housing. that helps families establish stable productive lives to ensure the future for their children. Our seminars, classes and college preparation for residents also hone productive members of our community. That is a benefit to us all.
